What are Science Gateways
If you ask google to
define: science gateway, you'll likely see a quote from an NSF-funded project :
A Science Gateway is a community-developed set of tools, applications, and data collections that are integrated through a portal or a suite of applications. Gateways provide access to a variety of capabilities including workflows, visualization, resource discovery, and job execution services.
This generic definition is true, but we'd like to trim that down list a little bit talk only about standards-compliant science gateways
Open Standards - Interoperable Gateways
We are promoting Openness, and a large part of this is the adoption of open standards - both when it comes to developing the actual infrastructure, as well as the ways in which we expect users and applications to interact with it. Many science gateway frameworks are designed to interact with specific computational or data backends, and have little or no provision for federated identity, and we consider this a bug, not a feature.
What if I want to discuss something that's not Standards-based ?
Feel free ! We want to be as accommodating and open as possible (besides, the great thing about standards is that there are so many of them !). Feel free to tell us how you're using science gateways, no matter their shape or form, but don't be surprised if someone suggests a few changes in the way you're doing things. We're all here to learn and share experiences, after all.
What is this category about ?
This is a category for the discussion of science gateways, both from a developer point of view, as well as a user point of view.
Some of the topics raised here may related to developing science gateways - either how to use existing frameworks, or discussing theoretical aspects of them. Topics related to applications within specific contexts, how to develop new ones, technical as well as UX issues are all up for discussion.
Users feel free to ask for new applications, advice on where to start, constructive criticism of technical or UX aspects, etc. This is a place for you to get more out of science gateways and interact with the developer community.
