I wanted to comment on the "Dakar Declaration" on Open Science which we will be distributing tomorrow. As a declaration on Openness, I feel that the discussion around the declaration should itself be Open.
First of all, it becomes problematic to discuss the declaration if there are no versions of the declaration - it will certainly evolve, and we should have a way of referring to versions.
Secondly, authorship and attribution is not very well defined. It would be nice to say explicitly who wrote the actual statement, as well as give the community at large the possibility for reworking and updating it - there needs therefore to be an explicit description of how to contribute to this statement.
I think though at the very least we need to cite prior art and inspiration -
There is a list of declarations in support of Open Access (there are likely many more). I think at least we should cite the important ones
Berlin Declaration on Open Access
Cape Town Declaration on Open Educational resources.
Liber Statement on Open Science
Rome Declaration by UNESCO on Open Science
If we could include these for some backing and context, I think it would make the Dakar declaration carry a bit more weight ?
