Emmanuel, Mary, Max and Joachim could add here but my short version of what the WIMEA-ICT project is up to is to improve the capacity at Makerere, DIT and University of Juba to collect weather data and produce weather forecasts. There are three research components:
- RC1 is focused on weather forecasting using WRF (that Roberto's team helped us gridify together with UiB). They are also responsible for the needs and requirements analysis of an affordable automated weather station that will be deployed in Ug, Tz and Ss during the project. probably in late 2016-2017. Isaac and Triphonia are PhD students here
- RC2 is focused on digitization of legacy weather data and creating national weather data repositories, similar to TRODAN in Nigeria
- RC3 is responsible for the design and manufacturing of an affordable automated weather station (AWS) to be implemented in 70 copies and spread over the three countries in cooperation with their national meteorological agencis (NMAs). This is where Emmanuel, Mary and Max are PhD students and where Amos Nungu, Julianne Sansa Otim, Richard Okou at Makerere are advisors. Robert and I are associate advisors associated with UiB since the project is Norwegian, funded by NORAD.
This involves electronic systems design, embedded systems design, sensor networks, data collection and transfer from sensors via sensor networks, gateway, upstream link to the central repository designed in RC2.
We use open source CAD tools (gEDA suite), A Contiki-based toolchain for the embedded systems design, 3D-printing tools (OpenSCAD, Cura) of some enclosures and radiation shields, etc
